How to make Moong Dal

Ingredients

For 4 Servings:

1 cup of Moong dal (split and husked mung bean)

3 cups of water

1 tablespoon of ghee or oil

1 teaspoon of cumin seeds

1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder

1/2 teaspoon of red chili powder

1 teaspoon of coriander powder

Salt to taste

1/2 teaspoon of garam masala powder (optional)

Fresh cilantro or parsley for garnish (optional)

Lime wedges or lemon juice (optional)

Recipe Directions

1. Rinse the moong dal in water a few times until the water runs clear.

2. In a heavy-bottomed pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil over medium heat.

3. Add the rinsed moong dal and bring to a simmer.

4. Add a pinch of turmeric powder, and salt. Cover the pot and reduce the heat to low.

5. Cook the dal for about 20-25 minutes or until it is soft and fully cooked.

6. In a pan, heat some oil or ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and asafoetida.

7. Once the seeds begin to crackle, add chopped ginger and green chili.

8. Add the cooked dal to the pan, and mix well. Let it simmer for about 2-3 minutes.

9. Add chopped coriander and lemon juice and mix well.

10. Serve the dal with rice, chapati or naan.
